Research/Science

The newly completed Manufacturing Lab at James Hillhouse High School represents a transformative investment in technology education and workforce readiness. Funded by a $2 million federal grant, this state-of-the-art facility supports the Manufacturing New Haven Pathway, a program offered by New Haven Public Schools that equips high school students with real-world technical skills aligned with today’s advanced manufacturing careers.

Designed to mirror modern industry environments, the lab features cutting-edge equipment including an automated CNC milling machine, precision lathe, and a dedicated metrology lab outfitted with 3D scanning and high-resolution 3D printing tools. Students engage directly in this technology, learning essential competencies such as blueprint reading, parametric design, benchwork, and workplace safety—all critical for success in high-tech manufacturing roles.

The flexible, open-layout space is divided into three zones: a central workshop for machining and fabrication, instructional workstations with integrated computer access, and a precision measurement lab. Graduates of the program can earn up to 12 college credits, accelerating their paths toward engineering, manufacturing, and other professional technical careers.

“Being part of this program has been a unique and life-changing [opportunity]” for Nassibat Abdou-Mama, current student enrolled in the program. “With the right support and determination, anything is possible.”

Despite the school remaining operational throughout construction, the project was completed on schedule, signaling New Haven’s commitment to future-ready education.
