Learning is flexible and functional
CWA initially conducted a feasibility and pre-design study for the redesign of the Three Rivers Community College Student Services Area, Library, Tutoring Center, and Language Arts Lab. Based on this work, CWA was engaged to provide full architectural services for the first phase of renovation and expansion of the Tutoring and Academic Success Center (TASC), extending the center into an adjacent 2,000-square-foot space.
The renovated TASC supports its mission as an inclusive, student-centered learning environment offering one-on-one and group tutoring, presentations, and skill-building workshops. The design balances openness and privacy through a mix of shared computer work areas and six private tutoring rooms equipped with monitors and colored glass marker boards, allowing flexible use for individual or group instruction.
Glass partitions maintain visual connectivity throughout the space, while an expanded waiting area, improved storage, and a dedicated tutor break/work room enhance functionality and support both students and staff.
We were also hired to realize the reconfiguration and renovation of the existing two-story, 13,100-square-foot Library at Three Rivers Community College for the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities (CSCU) system.
Our design responds to the evolving role of the academic library—from a primarily book-centered environment to a dynamic, student-focused learning hub. The design reimagines the library as an accessible, flexible setting that supports a range of learning styles, from quiet individual study to collaborative, technology-enabled work.
The scope includes a comprehensive interior reconfiguration featuring new partitions and redefined entrances to improve clarity of movement and wayfinding. Built-in casework and shelving are integrated with computer workstations, informal seating, and a variety of study zones to promote comfort, adaptability, and engagement. Across both floors, the renovated library fosters a welcoming atmosphere that encourages use throughout the day and supports the changing academic and social needs of the campus community.
